Catherine, a member of the women's tennis team, displayed her artwork in in early February. A studio art major from Greensboro, NC, her exhibition was titled “Dissection.” The pieces were full scale sculptures of bodies made out of sisal rope. “The motivation was combining my interest in medicine and anatomy with my passion for art in a manner that evoked a personal emotional response.”
Following graduation, Catherine will attend Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN with plans to become an optometrist.
Annie, who will graduate with a double major in studio art and Hispanic studies, chose paint and canvas to convey her message. The title of her series of paintings was Translations. “Through my artwork, I seek to explore the selective nature of our reconstructed memories. The ideas for my paintings can come from places I have been, scenes I witness or tree lines that capture my attention. These fragments remembered are intertwined with moments invented and beget a different moment and place which is seen in my paintings.”
A field hockey letter winner, Annie is from Lake Forest, Illinois and plans to marry in June and move to Charlottesville, VA where she hopes to teach and coach.
Allison, a native of Tallahassee, Florida and a member of the swim team showcased her installation in April. “Distinction in Cohesion” stemmed from architectural theory related to urban populations, manipulation of space and one's emotional response to a built environment.
“The sculptures I produce have strong formalistic qualities that challenge cultural stereotypes constructed around particular everyday objects. My work explores the possibility of creating spaces that appear clean, pure, and elegant utilizing simple materials and simple forms of manipulation.”
Allison graduates this May with degree in art with an environmental studies concentration and has been accepted into Harvard Graduate School of Design where she will study architecture.
All three artists display once again the amazing talents of Davidson student athletes and provide fresh examples of what this group is capable of.
