Davidson athletes tackle tough summer internships.
Juggling challenging course work along with practice, competition and travel are just a few hallmarks of the Davidson student athlete. Naturally, the summer would seem the perfect opportunity to relax, but that's not the case for such Davidson high achievers. In fact, quite a few student athletes have secured impressive internships that will keep them busy all summer long.
Internship opportunities, some 5,000+ culled by the Office of Career Services, exist on an extensive database and cover many areas of interest in locations both local and international. Internships span scientific research and community based programs including through the Davidson Research Initiative (DRI), Civic Engagement Fellows, Sustainability Scholars Program and the Education Scholars Program. Active alumni involvement through the 100+ Internship Challenge has yielded numerous other internship opportunities and aided in the formation of an Entrepreneurship and Innovation Internship program.
Internships, when done right, are the single most important way for Davidson students to explore careers and the world of work before graduation,” noted Assistant Director of Internships Ashley Neff. “We greatly appreciate the many alumni who have assisted our efforts to connect students to these valuable experiences.”
Headed by Dr. Spencer Redding, the DRI provides Davidson students with real world experience in science and medicine. One such DRI recipient is Brooke Osborne '14 (Field Hockey). She will work with Dr. Raye Alford '86 at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas for about 6 weeks this summer. Dr. Alford is the Associate Professor and Coordinator of Academic and Scientific Program Development, and she works in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory, specifically in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The goal of her laboratory is to improve the detection and diagnosis of genetic hearing loss.
“I will be participating in her laboratory research on the genetics of deafness,” said Brooke. “Some of the specific things I learn about are DNA sequencing including primer design. I will also learn about genetics/genomics bioinformatics resources as well as professional organizations and training pathways.
Through Davidson's Center for Civic Engagement Layne Doctson '16 (volleyball), Tim Hines '15 (football) and Xzavier Killings '16 (track), were selected as interns and will be exposed to work with not-for profit organizations in the greater Charlotte area.
The Education Scholars is a new “Transition to Impact” summer program for Davidson students interested in driving change at every level of our education system. Two of the eight students placed in immersive project-based internships are athletes. They will work with local partners in and around the Charlotte school system.
Another new initiative is the Davidson Innovation & Internship Program, a joint collaboration of the President's Office and the Office of Career Services. This program connects qualified Davidson students to full time, 8-10 week internships with start-up organizations, innovation-oriented companies, venture capital firms, and entrepreneurial social ventures. Funding for the interns comes directly from the employer.
Some additional summer internships that have been secured are:
