DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team will add a trio of newcomers to their roster as Anne Federico, Katherine English and Lauren McFayden will join the squad for the 2013 season as announced by head coach Ginny Turner on Friday.
“I am thrilled to welcome these three student-athletes to Davidson and our field hockey team,” said Turner. “All three of them are capable of making an immediate impact on this program and the Davidson community. Throughout their high school careers they have set records, given numerous hours to community service and they have been leaders on and off the athletic fields. They have commitment and dedication to excellence and passion for the game. Katherine, Anne and Lauren are a tremendous addition to this team and they will undoubtedly help us reach the level of success we are striving for.”
A native of Towson, Md., Federico spent four seasons as a starter at forward and midfield for Notre Dame Preparatory School. She was a three-time IAAM All-Conference All-Star as well as a three-time Baltimore Sun Player to Watch. Federico garnered All-Metro Second Team honors in 2010 and 2011 and was named to the all-state first team in 2012. She led the Blazers in both goals and assists from 2010-2012 and was a Futures Participant from 2008-2011 and an NFC participant in 2009.
“Anne is a tenacious and spirited player who's speed and skills will allow her to fit right into our midfield and forward lines,” said Turner. “She has quick stick skills and will take a shot from any angle in the circle. Anne's speed allows her to be a huge threat both defensively and offensively.”
Federico earned first and second honors all four years at Notre Dame Prep, and was a 2011 and 2012 Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society member. She was also a member of the National Science Honor Society in 2011 and 2012.
English hails from Louisville, Ky., where she helped lead the Sacred Heart Academy Valkyrie to the 2010 and 2012 state championship. A team captain, she was a Kentucky First Team All-State Selection in 2011 and 2012, and was a two-time NFHCA All-American nominee. English was a participant in the Futures National Tournament in 2008 and 2010 and played for the U14, U16 and U19 Futures teams. In 2011, she garnered Kentucky Junior All-State honors as well as Apple All-Tournament and District All-Tournament Accolades.
“Katherine is a fearless athlete who has excellent basics,” said Turner. “A very coachable player, Katherine is very athletic and always determined to get the job done on the field. Her ability to see passing lanes and find the back of the cage will be a huge asset to our program.”
Also a varsity tennis player, English is a two-time state doubles champion who was named to the all-state teams in both 2011 and 2012. She was named to the Honor Roll of Distinction for Christian Service from 2010-2011 and has volunteered her time with both Habitat for Humanity and the Baptist East Hospital. English will follow in the footsteps of older sister Hannah, who played for the Wildcats from 2008-11.
McFayden is another new face but familiar name for the Wildcats as older sister Tyler McFayden is a forward who will enter her senior season in 2012. The younger McFayden, also a forward, comes to Davidson from nearby Charlotte Country Day where she was a two-time CISAA All-Conference honoree who earned NCISAA All-State honors in 2012. She is a three-time USFH Futures competitor and has been the leading scorer at the 2011 Festival and for the Charlotte Ambush at the Disney Showcase. The Ambush were the FOCUS Showcase and Regional Club Champions in 2011-12 and placed 10th overall at the National Club Championships that season. McFayden has twice competed in the North Carolina All-Star game and was a team captain for Charlotte Country Day and offensive MVP in 2012. She was also honored as a member of the South Charlotte First Team and Super Weekly First Team in her senior season.
“Lauren is a talented forward who has grit and determination on the field,” said Turner. “Her ability to set up plays and find the cage from the forward line will make her a great addition to our attacking unit.”
A three-sport athlete for the Buccaneers, McFayden spent three seasons on the varsity basketball team and two on the varsity track team. Along with sister Tyler, she is a school record holder on the distance medley relay. She also participated in the World Quest Team for three years, helping the team take first place in the state as a sophomore and senior. McFayden has served as a board member for the Environmental Awareness Council and was an elected officer for the Model United Nations who was awarded Best Delegate at the Washington D.C. conference. She has volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte, the Aquilifer Service Club and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council. McFayden excels in the classroom as an AP Scholar, boasting a 4.78 GPA as a member of the National Honor Society, NFHCA National All-Academic Team and Head of School's List. She has won the Ernest B. Wright English Award and will soon be inducted into the Cum Laude Society.
