DAVIDSON, N.C. — For the second week in a row, senior shooting guard Laura Murray was named the women's basketball Southern Conference Player of the Week for games from Dec. 3-Dec.10, as announced by the league office today.
Murray is the second player to repeat as winner this year of the weekly award, joining Chattanooga's Taylor Hall, who earned it Nov. 12 & 19. The award is Murray's third overall for her career.
The senior was also honored this week by collegesportsmadness.com as SoCon Player of the Week.
The senior led Davidson to a 2-1 week as the Wildcats got off to a 2-0 start in SoCon play with wins vs. Wofford and Furman. The lone setback on the week was against Rutgers.
After averaging 20.5 points the week before, Murray again hit the 20-point average by dropping in 21.3 points a game and pulling in 6.3 rebounds. She scored in double figures in all three games, including going off for 25 and 24 points, respectively, vs. Wofford and Furman.
The 25-point outing vs. the Terriers was a season-best as she hit 8-of-12 field goals, including 4-for-5 from downtown and dished out six assists. Then against Furman Monday night, Murray recorded her first career double-double on 24 points and a career-high tying 11 rebounds in a 73-66 win.
Murray, who had a team-best 15 points vs. Rutgers, finished the week shooting 43.2 percent from the floor and even better from three-land at 47.1 percent. She was 18-for-24 at the free throw line, while dishing out nine assists and pocketing 11 steals.
The Wildcats' third all-time leading scorer in program history, Murray is averaging 19.4 points a game, good for second-best in the SoCon. She needs just 35 more points to pass Hall of Famer Jennifer O'Brien's 1,510.
Murray also ranks second in the league in steals (31, 2.8 spg) and fourth in assists (38, 3.5 apg).
Davidson (5-6, 2-0 SoCon) takes a 12-day break, before hosting cross-county rival Charlotte, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m.
