LYNCHBURG, Va. – Danielle King tallied her second goal of the season but Pacific struck three consecutive times as fourth-ranked Davidson fell 3-1 to the West Division's third-ranked Tigers in a consolation match up at the 2013 NorPac Tournament at Liberty Field Hockey Field Friday evening.
The Wildcats end the season with a 6-14 overall mark and a 2-6 NorPac record. King was later named to the NorPac All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
Anna Davis had four shots to lead the Davidson offense, with Melissa Funsten adding a pair of shots on goal with three attempts total. Katherine English also had two shots on goal as the Wildcats attempted 15 shots with nine on net.
Carolyn Macek and Emily Leytham split time in goal for Davidson. Macek, who got the start, made four saves and did not allow a goal in the first half. Leytham made six saves and finished with three goals against her.
Paige Counsman had five shots in leading Pacific (5-14, 2-4 NorPac) and scored one of three goals. Emily Tregoning had four shots and a goal, while Maggie Grindatti had a goal on her lone shot. The Tigers outshot the Wildcats 17-15, though Davidson would claim an 8-2 advantage on penalty corners.
Maggie Corner got the start in goal for the Tigers, making eight stops. Molly Macierz also made an appearance in net.
The first half was a defensive battle as each team put up five shots, but neither found the back of the cage. Less than five minutes into the second half King was awarded a penalty stroke and beat Macierz, who came in to defend against the attempt, to put the Wildcats on the board up 1-0.
Davidson's lead lasted for nearly 10 minutes before Counsman took a pass from Kayley Brown and knocked it in from close range following a penalty corner to tie the game at 1-1. Another ten minutes went by before Grindatti gave the Tigers the 2-1 lead with a strike off a rebound near the right post. Tregoning added the insurance goal with 10 minutes left to play, dribbling through the top of the circle to send it in an assure the Tigers the 3-1 win.
