LYNCHBURG, Va. – One day prior to their opening contest at the 2013 NorPac Tournament, four Davidson field hockey players were honored with seasonal awards as part of the opening banquet held at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
Senior forward Tyler McFayden and sophomore midfielder Melissa Funsten earned recognition as part of the NorPac East All-Conference Team, while sophomores Mia Kane and Connie Cape were honored as co-recipients of the Julie Nagel Extraordinary Teammate Awards. McFayden was also named to the all-academic team.
McFayden ends her final campaign with the Wildcats as the team leader in assists with seven on the year. She has also added a pair of goals in totaling 11 points on the season, a figure that ranks third on the team. Davidson's primary inserter on penalty corners, she has notched one game-winner and assisted on two more in 2013. In the classroom, McFayden boasts a 3.559 GPA as a psychology major.
In her second season with the Wildcats, Funsten is the team leader in goals with nine. She has also recorded a pair of assists for a team-high 16 points and successfully converted a penalty stroke this season. Funsten had a goal and an assist in a crucial overtime victory vs. NorPac foe Appalachian State earlier this year and recorded a hat trick in a 4-3 overtime win vs. Vermont in September.
The Julie Nagel Extraordinary Teammate award was created in memory of former Appalachian State player Julie Nagel and recognizes players for their genuine love of the sport and academic institution. The winner is selected annually by the Nagel family. Despite both suffering season-ending injuries, both Kane and Cape have remained dedicated to the squad and have contributed to the team in various ways. The two were lauded by their teammates for continuing in their quest to improve despite being physical limitations and the continued support they offer.
Liberty's Natalie Barr was named the NorPac East Offensive Player of the Year, while Longwood goalkeeper Kaye Goulding was the NorPac East Defensive Player of the Year. Stacey de Grandhomme of Longwood was the East's Offensive Player of the Year and Liberty's Serena Barr was honored as the Maria Whitehead Rookie of the Year.
Davidson, the fourth-ranked seed in the East Division, will face No. 10 Stanford, the West Division's top-ranked squad, in a 4 p.m. match Thursday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va.
