DAVIDSON, N.C. – Chad Creamer will serve as Davidson football's defensive coordinator, linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator, and D.J. Wingate will serve as the defensive backs coach, head coach Paul Nichols announced Monday.
Both Creamer and Wingate have prior experience working with Nichols. Creamer served as a player personnel assistant at Illinois under Nichols last season, while Nichols was Wingate's position coach when Wingate was a defensive back as a student-athlete at Marshall during the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
Prior to joining Nichols at Illinois, Creamer spent two seasons guiding the defense at Capital University (Columbus, Ohio), and also served as a graduate assistant at Austin Peay and an undergraduate assistant at Ohio State.
“Chad possesses a relentless work ethic and an attention to detail that will allow our program to reach its full potential,” said Nichols. “He has an excellent knowledge of defensive football and will implement an attacking style. Chad relates well to student–athletes and will do a tremendous job of grooming our linebacker corps into an outstanding group. Finally, Chad will organize our recruiting efforts. He has a keen understanding of what type of student–athlete we attract to Davidson College and an innovative plan to get them wearing red and black.”
Creamer was promoted to defensive coordinator after just one season as the secondary coach at Capital, and also assisted coaching the special teams units. In his first season in 2010, Creamer guided a secondary that recorded 13 interceptions. Under his guidance in 2011, Creamer's unit then held three opponents to less than 13 points and lowered its points allowed average from the previous season.
“I am extremely blessed and appreciative for the opportunity to work at a place such as Davidson,” said Creamer. “I look forward to the challenge ahead and cannot wait to contribute to Wildcat football and the institution as a whole.”
Creamer spent the 2009 season on the defensive staff at Austin Peay as a graduate assistant. While coaching the safeties at Austin Peay, Creamer's secondary played an essential role in the Governors' 24-20 upset win against No. 16 Eastern Kentucky, recording an interception while helping the rest of the defense shut out the Big Red offense in the second half.
In 2006, Creamer started his coaching career as an undergraduate student coach at Ohio State when he interned with the strength and conditioning staff during the Buckeyes' run to the BCS National Championship Game. Creamer then served as a student assistant working with the corners as Ohio State made a return trip to the BCS National Title Game. In 2008, Creamer worked with the defensive line and also assisted with the rest of the defense during a season that saw the 10-3 Buckeyes take part in the Fiesta Bowl. Creamer contributed to a Buckeye defense that permitted a mere 13.9 points per contest while holding seven opponents to 14 points or less.
A native of Jamestown, Ohio, Creamer earned a bachelor's degree in education with an emphasis in sport and leisure studies at Ohio State, and completed his master's degree in health and human performance at Austin Peay in 2011.
Wingate comes to Davidson after serving as a member of the coaching staff at
the University of South Florida for the past two seasons. He joined USF as a program assistant for the 2011 season and then served as a graduate assistant for the Bulls last year.
“D.J. will coach our secondary and also assist with our special teams,” saidNichols. “He is one of the finest young men I have ever had the opportunity to coach. I am so excited to have the chance to work with him. He has a passion to help young people and his energy is contagious. He adds significant value to our football family.”
Wingate came to USF after spending the 2011 spring season as a volunteer assistant in the secondary at Marshall.
A 2010 graduate of Marshall who double majored in marketing and management, Wingate played fourseasons with the Thundering Herd in the secondary. He appeared in 34 games, posting 45 tackles and 13 pass breakups during his career. He hails from Daytona Beach, Fla.
