DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey seniors Finley Amato and Sarah Fisher, along with freshman Melissa Funsten, were honored by the NorPac as the league's weekly award winners for their performances during this weekend's contests vs. Louisville and Ball State.
Amato was named the NorPac East Offensive Player of the Week, while Fisher earned NorPac East Defensive Player of the Week honors. Funsten became the second consecutive NorPac East Freshman of the Week for the 'Cats as fellow newcomer Anna Davis garnered the acknowledgement last week.
Amato finished the weekend with four goals for a total of eight points. After netting her first of the season in the 'Cats 3-2 loss at No. 23 Louisville on Saturday, the senior forward produced a hat trick in the squad's 4-1 win over Ball State the following afternoon. Amato now ranks third in Davidson history in all-time scoring with 38 career goals. A two-time defending NorPac East Offensive and Player of the Year, she was the NorPac East Offensive Player of the Week three times in 2011.
Fisher earns the honor after making 11 stops to close out the weekend with a .733 save percentage. She boasts a goals against average of 2.00 after making six saves in the team's loss to Louisville on Saturday before deflecting five shots in the team's 4-1 win over Ball State. Like her fellow senior Amato, Fisher has also moved up the all-time rankings. She is now third all-time in minutes with 3366:29 and is fifth with 257 career saves. Fisher had previously earned the honor last season.
Funsten earns her first career award for the 'Cats after finishing the two-game trip with nine points. She knocked in a goal and picked up a helper on Amato's tally in the team's 3-2 loss to No. 23 Louisville. Funsten then added another goal as well as two more assists as the team downed Ball State 4-1 on Sunday. She is currently the team leader in points with nine.
The Wildcats will face James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 9, in a 1 p.m. match up in Harrisonburg, Va.
