RADFORD, Va. – Finley Amato became the program's all-time scoring leader and helped the Davison field hockey team move to 2-0 in NorPac play by scoring the game winner in a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over Radford on Friday evening.
Amato netted her 40th career goal in regulation to tie the all-time scoring record before notching the game winner and overtaking Kayli Maxwell as the school's career scoring leader. She had entered the season in fourth place all-time with 34 goals and has a team-high seven thus far.
Fellow senior Sarah Fisher had seven saves in picking up her fourth win of the season. The 'Cats (4-6, 2-0) outshot the Highlanders 13-12 in the game and took seven penalty corners. Amato had a team-high seven shots, while Tyler McFayden, who also finished with a goal, and Melissa Funsten each had two.
The Highlanders struck first off of a penalty corner as Stacey Mackintosh netted one with 10 minutes to play in the first half to give Radford the 1-0 lead.
Amato tied the game 20 minutes into the second half, taking a pass from Annie Evans and sending it into the far corner. However, the tie would be short lived as Radford's Jana Bayer scored an unassisted goal just 10 seconds later to put the Highlanders up 2-1.
McFayden tied the game with just under three minutes to play in regulation. After the 'Cats attempted a shot off of a penalty corner, McFayden was able to shove the rebound past Sidney Encarnacion to even the score at 2-2.
Mackintosh had the first opportunity to score for the Highlanders, but was blocked in front of net. McFayden reciprocated for the 'Cats, but Encarnacion came up with the save. Fisher then came up with a save on Emily Voss, while Funsten had an attempt blocked to keep the score at 2-2.
Thirteen minutes into the extra period, Amato tallied the game winner. Evans sent a cross pass over, which Amato was able to send past the RU keeper for the win.
Amato and the 'Cats will return to Davidson for a three-game home stand that kicks off on Tuesday when they host NorPac foe Appalachian State in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
