DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson was able to generate scoring opportunities but was unable to find the back of the cage as VCU took a 2-0 victory over the Wildcats in non-conference field hockey action Friday evening at Belk Turf Field.

Davidson (2-4) held the advantages in both shots (9-6) and penalty corners (6-2) but Megan Botteri made three saves and Kelsey Powell and Arialle Hess each scored goals for VCU (5-0).

The Wildcats held VCU without a shot until just 6:01 remained in the first half, but the Rams were able to score on the opportunity. A crossing pass was deflected into mid-air by Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Fisher, but Powell was there to bat the ball out of mid-air, inside the left post.

Davidson's best chances to score came early in the second half when the 'Cats had three penalty corner attempts in two minutes. Finley Amato and Anna Davis both unleashed shots on the first attempt that were saved by Botteri. Tyler McFayden had her shot blocked on the second try, and Amato's shot on the third attempt went just wide to the right.

VCU then converted its first penalty corner attempt of the gamte at 43:59. After a pair of passes at the top of the circle, Kelsey Scherrer sent a hard shot to the front of the cage that Hess was able to deflect in.

The Rams locked down defensively for the remainder of the game, allowing just three shots, none of which were on goal.

Amato led the 'Cats with four shots. Fisher made three saves.

Davidson will return to action Sunday at 1 p.m., hosting No. 25 Richmond at Belk Turf Field.
