DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team did not allow a shot from the Georgetown Hoyas, claiming a decisive 4-0 victory for their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Belk Turf Field in Davidson.
Senior midfielder Annie Evans led the 'Cats with a goal and an assist for three points on the day, while freshman Anna Davis recorded her second goal of the season in the rout.
In a vast improvement from yesterday's 5-1 loss to William & Mary, the Davidson offense outshot Georgetown 24-0 and was awarded 10 penalty corners to GU's one. The defense also stood strong, not allowing a shot as Sarah Fisher and Carolyn Macek split the shutout.
Tyler McFayden started the scoring off with her first goal of the season ten minutes into the contest. McFayden lifted a shot into the top left of the cage to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0 on her unassisted tally.
The 'Cats would bring the 1-0 lead into the second half before increasing their advantage further. Twenty minutes into the second period, Davis knocked in her second of the season on a feed from Evans to push the score to 2-0. Evans would notch one of her own seven minutes later after being awarded a penalty shot. She successfully converted to put the Davidson lead at three goals.
With under a minute to go, freshman Melissa Funsten knocked in her first career goal after dribbling the ball through two defenders and sending it straight into the corner to put the final score at 4-0 in favor of the Wildcats.
The Wildcats will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend when they head to Louisville for a pair of contest. First up is a tilt with No. 23 Louisville on September 1 at 1 p.m. at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Ky. The 'Cats will then face Ball State the following day in a 2 p.m. neutral site game also at Trager Stadium.
