DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson College field hockey team gave up a slew of penalty corners, allowing William & Mary to convert more than once as the Wildcats took a 5-1 loss to the Tribe in their season-opening game at Belk Turf Field in Davidson on Saturday.
After scoring the first goal of the game the 'Cats gave up five straight to the Tribe, allowing William & Mary a successful penalty stroke in addition to three consecutive goals off of penalty corners. Neither goalkeeper gave up a goal up the second half, but the Wildcats couldn't produce enough offense to make a comeback.
Freshman Anna Davis started things off with her first career goal just under nine minutes into the first half. Davis carried the ball into the circle before passing it off to Tyler McFayden. McFayden then sent it back over to Davis who put it past Tribe goalkeeper Elizabeth Frey for the score, putting the Wildcats ahead 1-0.
The Tribe was able to even things up eight minutes later as Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Fisher deflected a loose ball that was picked up by Ashley Kyle, who sent it in for the score. Soon after Christine Johnson converted on a penalty stroke as William & Mary took a 2-1 lead with 12 minutes to play in the half.
Johnson then added three more goals off of penalty corners to finish out the half. With just under ten to go, Jesse Ebner sent a corner over to Emma Clifton for the stop before Johnson sent it in from the top of the circle to put the Tribe up 3-1.
Closing out the half, it was Pip Saunders who took the corner and Chaney Manganello that made the stop for Johnson, who scored from the top of the circle again for a 4-1 advantage. She then combined with Ebner and Manganello on her final goal as the Tribe took the 5-1 lead.
The 'Cats had just three penalty corners to the Tribe's 12 and had six shots on the day with Finley Amato's four attempts leading the way. William & Mary claimed the shot advantage as well with 16, though the Wildcats allowed just three in the second half.
Fisher made four stops on the day, including three stellar saves in the first half. Her Tribe counterpart Frey finished with three stops.
The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Georgetown in a noon contest at Belk Turf Field.
