DAVIDSON, N.C. – Fresh off winning the program's first regular season Southern Conference title after going a school-record 17-3 in league play, the Davidson women's basketball team has been invited to be a part of the 16-team 2012 Preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament.
Coming off a 22-10 campaign in 2011-12, Davidson is one of 11 teams in the field of 16 which are coming off of a postseason berth. The 'Cats earned an automatic bid into the postseason Women's NIT a year ago, their second-ever trip to the postseason. This is their third time playing in the preseason WNIT, with the 'Cats most recent invite coming during the 2004-05 in which they played Duke.
Joining the Wildcats this year in the preseason WNIT are Delaware, Duquesne, Georgetown, Grambling State, Illinois State, Iowa, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Morehead State, North Carolina, Northern Illinois, Sacred Heart and Sam Houston State.
The Preseason WNIT kicks off the women's college basketball season. It features a three-game guarantee format, with the event opening Nov. 9 with first-round games. Second-round games will be played Nov. 11, semifinals will be Nov. 14-15, and the championship is set for Sunday, Nov. 18. Teams that lose in the first two rounds will play consolation games on the second weekend, Nov. 16-17. All games are hosted by participating schools.
In last year's Preseason WNIT No. 1 Baylor defeated No. 2 Notre Dame on its way to history's only perfect 40-0 season.

Davidson had one of its best seasons during head coach Michele Savage's second year. The 22 wins were one off the school-record as Savage was honored by her peers and the media with the SoCon Coach of the Year award. She also had the privilege of coaching the SoCon Player of the Year and Defender of the Year Sophia Aleksandravicius.
The 'Cats return 12 letterwinners for the 2012-13 campaign, including Aleksandravicius and All-SoCon First Team member Laura Murray. Of the 12 letterwinners who return, four of them were starters a season ago.
