Davidson Field Hockey to Add Nine Newcomers

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey Class of 2016 will include nine members, as head coach Ginny Turner announced the 2012 incoming freshmen Wednesday.
The class includes a pair of in-state standouts: Charlotte Latin forward Mia Kane (Charlotte) and Ravenscroft midfielder Melissa Funsten (Raleigh), the younger sister of Lanny Funsten, a rising junior, all-conference wide receiver on the Davidson football team.
“We are ecstatic to announce this class of nine, very talented student-athletes,” said Turner. “After losing eight graduating seniors, these women are exactly who we need to step in. Their talent and commitment will allow them to make an immediate stamp on this program.”
Midfielder/forwards Danielle King (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), a Wendy's High School Heisman national finalist, and Anna Davis (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) will arrive at Davidson from the state of Maryland. Midfielder Becky Johnson and goalkeeper Emily Leytham are both from Albemarle H.S. in Charlottesville, Va.
Lake Forest H.S. (Illinois) will have the largest representation on the Wildcats next season, as midfielder Lauren Yarkony will join Lake Forest alums and returning rising seniors Finley Amato and Annie Evans.
Forward Lucy Pidcock will join the Wildcats from Moravian Academy in Allentown, Pa., while goalkeeper Connie Cape hails from Episcopal H.S. in Houston, Texas.
“They have all excelled both on the field and in the classroom, and I believe the impact these women will have during their four years here will reach far beyond the field,” added Turner.
Davidson returns just four starters in 2012, led by two-time NorPac East Player and Offensive Player of the Year Finley Amato.
