DAVIDSON, N.C. – Barbara Sitton (Richmond, Va.) registered her first career double-double, but Chattanooga's Taylor Hall had one of her own and sparked a game-changing second-half run that snapped Davidson's win streak as the Wildcats fell on the road, 55-48, Saturday evening in McKenzie Arena in Southern Conference women's basketball.
Davidson (20-8, 16-3 SoCon) fell into second place in the league standings as it saw its season-best nine-game win streak come to an end. Appalachian State took over first after its win at Samford earlier in the day.
Chattanooga (20-8, 15-4 SoCon) used an 13-2 run, with Hall scoring 11 of those points, to turn a 33-31 deficit into a 44-35 lead and the Mocs would never give it back the rest of the way. Hall hit all three of her triples for the game during the run.
Hall finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds to pace three Mocs in double digits. Whitney Hood and Kylie Lambert each had 10 points apiece.
The Wildcats also put three in double figures with Sitton going off for 11 points and a career-high tying 10 rebounds. Laura Murray (Harrisburg, Pa.) had a team-best 12 points, and Sophia Aleksandravicius (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) added 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
Leading 25-22 after the break, Davidson maintained its lead until the 14:30 mark when both teams traded the lead twice. Murray hit a layup for a 33-31 advantage with 11:26 to go, but that would be Davidson's last lead.
Hall started a 13-2 spurt with a three-ball at the top of the key and added another two possessions later. The forward finished off the run with yet another shot from downtown and it was 44-35 with 6:32 remaining. The Mocs' lead would grow to 10 twice over the next couple of minutes.
Davidson cut the deficit to five, 53-48, on a bucket inside by Amanda Ottaway (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) with 1:01 on the clock, but despite holding Chattanooga to just three points in the last 1:54, the 'Cats could not mustered any more points after Ottaway's layup.
Davidson led all but one minute of the first half as it went into the break up 25-22. The Wildcats held the Mocs to 26 percent shooting, hauling in 26 first-half boards of the misses. Sitton matched her season-high in the first half with eight rebounds.
A quick four points by Murray and a jumper at the top of the key by Ottaway gave the 'Cats a 15-9 lead at the 12:24 mark. Later, a power-dribble drive by Sarah Davis (St. Clair, Mich.) made it 23-18 with under four minutes remaining.
Faith Dupree brought the Mocs within one, 23-22, on a short jumper, but Sitton capped off the half with a bucket inside and neither team scored in the final 1:16 to make the margin three.
The Wildcats concluded the regular season with a trip to Birmingham, Ala., for a 8 p.m. contest at Samford.
Game Notes: Davidson saw its five-game road win streak come to an end… the nine-game win streak was the second-longest in school history...
