CHARLESTON, S.C. – Philip Elias and Scott Patrick both earned pins for Davidson, but The Citadel claimed the remaining bouts for a 32-12 victory in the Southern Conference opener for both teams Thursday night in McAlister Field House.
Elias gave Davidson (5-2, 0-1 SoCon) an early 6-0 lead pinning Steven Cox in just 1:48 at 125 pounds, but The Citadel (1-1, 1-0 SoCon) claimed the next six matches. The Bulldogs earned a decision at 133 pounds before Davidson's Sejiro Littleton went the distance with the nation's seventh-ranked wrestler, Ugi Khishignyam. However Ugi prevailed with a 21-6 technical fall with the riding time point for an 8-6 Bulldog lead.
The Citadel's Jordan Dix held on for a 4-3 decision over Kevin Birmingham in one of the most closely contested matches of the evening. The Bulldogs added another decision at 157 pounds before Chris Cirenza's comeback bid at 165 pounds came up just short. Cirenza trailed 8-0 after the last period, but rallied with a takedown and a pair of two-point near falls to come within two, but a reversal by The Citadel's Vincent Bellaran gave him a 10-6 lead at the end of the second period. Cirenza used a pair of takedowns to pull within one and briefly went ahead in the final seconds with two near fall points, but Bellaran executed another reversal to win 13-12.
John Duane's pin at 174 pounds gave The Citadel a 23-6 lead before Patrick's pin at 184 pounds in 4:40 made the score 23-12.
The Bulldogs claimed another decision at 197 pounds and No. 16 Odie Delaney earned a pin at heavyweight for the final margin.
Davidson will compete next in January, traveling to Pennsylvania to compete at Franklin & Marshall (Jan. 11) and at the Pitt Duals (Jan. 13).
