DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Over 90 friends of Mike Maloy gathered on campus to celebrate the $1MM basketball scholarship established in Maloy's name. A year-long effort, chaired by Jerry Kroll '70 and Cheryle and Joel Williamson '67, the Mike Maloy Basketball Scholarship is currently held by De'Mon Brooks '14.
Joining the group of basketball teammates, fraternity brothers, and classmates were the family of Mike Maloy – Leslie Clarke, son Mike and daughter Nicole Maloy, sister Lillian Maloy, and new family member John Rogers '11. While a student, Rogers explored the role that Mike Maloy played in integrating Davidson's campus through the creation of a documentary. Before graduating, Rogers successfully lobbied then-president Tom Ross '72 to recognize Maloy and the heroic and historic efforts of his fraternity brothers. In February 2011, the campus unveiled a tribute to Maloy in the Nisbet lobby of the Baker Sports Complex. Kroll and the Williamsons volunteered to lead the scholarship drive, which successfully concluded in May 2012, with over $1,000,000 committed to the scholarship.
Special and powerful presentations were made by President Carol Quillen, former President Tom Ross '72, and Head Men's Basketball Coach Bob McKillop. Notable among the honored guests were former Athletic Director and Head Men's Basketball Coach Terry Holland '64, former President Sam Spencer '40, and former Dean of Students Will Terry '54. John and Nancy Kota were also recognized as they represented the early donors to the general basketball endowment.
