Wildcats Claim Tournament Berth with 3-0 Sweep of Wofford

DAVIDSON, N.C – Tindall Sewell's 16 kills led the way as the Davidson volleyball team completed a Senior Day sweep of Wofford, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena to earn a spot in the 2012 Southern Conference tournament. The 'Cats claimed the match with set scores of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22.
At 11-15 on the season and 7-9 in the SoCon, the Wildcats will enter the tournament as the fourth seed in the south division. The Terriers finished their season 15-14 overall and 5-11 in the SoCon. Prior to the match, Davidson honored graduating seniors Ariel Ley and Molly Crenshaw.
The Wildcats hit .216 on the day with Sewell's 16 kills helping her to finish with a .468 attacking percentage. Sewell has now hit .400 or better in eight matches this season. Ley hit .429 in the match with 37 assists and a pair of service aces while recording 13 digs for a double-double. Fellow senior Crenshaw led the defense with 25 digs and contributed a pair of assists and an ace as well.
Sewell also had a match-high six block assists to help the Wildcats record 7.0 team blocks.
Caroline Brown also finished in double figures in kills with 13, and added in eight assists to go along with four block assists. Taylor Pisel had seven kills a pair of digs, while Shannon McPherson slammed down five kills on six total attacks to hit .833. McPherson also added in four blocks assists.
Leading the team with three service aces was Megan Chamberlin, who now ranks second on the team with 25 on the season. The 'Cats put up seven aces on the day, marking the second-most for a three-set match this season. They previously had 11 when the defeated Wofford 3-0 back in September.
Amanda Ligouri led the Terriers with 12 kills and a pair of aces as Wofford hit .135 with 4.0 team blocks. Rachel Woodlee had 10 kills while Bekah Dorsey posted 15 digs and 33 assists. Wendy Burnett and Arden Anderson each recorded a block and a block assist for the Terriers.
Ley started the first set off with a pair of service aces for the Wildcats, but it was Terriers who took a slim 13-10 lead. Davidson came back to tie the set at 15-15 and again at 19-19 on a kill by Ley. Despite a late rally by the Terriers, the Wildcats came away with the 25-23 win on a kill from Sewell.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 4-1 lead in set two and were able to stay ahead 13-10 when Brown slammed down a kill. Sewell served up an ace to put the lead at 19-14, and the 'Cats would come away with the 25-21 with, once again, a kill from Sewell.
An ace from Chamberlin and a pair of kills by Pisel helped the 'Cats to a 6-1 lead in early in the third set. Anastasia Owen served seven straight points as Davidson extended their lead to 13-5 before the Terriers rallied to tie the set at 17-17 on a kill by Woodlee. The 'Cats took a 21-17 lead on another point from Pisel, but Wofford would again make the comeback and tie the set at 22-22. A kill by Sewell had the 'Cats serving set point before a red card awarded to the Wofford coach gave Davidson the 25-22 win.
The Wildcats, who will hos the SoCon tournament, are slated to face the north division's top seed in Samford on Saturday at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the face the winner of the College of Charleston/Chattanooga match on Sunday.
