DAVIDSON, N.C. — A select few players of the Davidson men's and women's tennis teams played against their region rivals as the Wildcats competed in the 2012 USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships over the weekend with the men's championships being held at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C., and women on the campus of Wake Forest at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
For the men, seniors Joe Schafer, Chris Mark and Kevin Moore, along with sophomore Nicky Kunz respresented the Wildcats, while the women sent freshman Laina Cummer and junior Brites Moniz-Soares.
Kunz and Schafer both competed in the singles and doubles draws. Kunz reached the second round after he earned a 6-3, 6-3 win vs. Robert Lindgren of Elon. He then started out with a 7-6 tiebreaker win vs. Zack Bost of Appalachian State in his second round first-set match, but dropped the next two, 6-3, 6-3 to close out his singles run.
Schafer fell in his first match, 6-3, 6-4 to UNC Wilmington, but came back to earn a pair of wins on the consolation side. He started with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph vs. a player from Elon, and then came back from dropping his first set of the next match, 6-3, to net 6-3, 6-4 victories in the next two sets over his Clemson opponent. The senior played another three-setter, only to come out on the wrong side of a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 decision to end his weekend.
The duo teamed up in doubles and scored an 8-4 first-round opening win over South Carolina. Their weekend was halted with an 8-3 defeat to the top seed in the draw, a pair from Duke.
Mark and Moore played together in doubles, falling in a very close tiebreaker contest to Duke's Daniel McCall and Josh Levine, 9-8.
On the women's side, Cummer had the best showing. The first year player worked her way into the main draw with two solid wins in the qualifying round. She scored a 6-3, 6-2 decision vs Gardner-Webb, then tallied a 7-5, 6-2 win vs. Barbora Lazarova of SoCon-foe Elon. Her run ended in the first round though with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 setback to Andrea Retolaza of host Wake Forest.
Moniz-Soares dropped her first match to a player from host Wake Forest, 7-5, 6-2. The junior's doubles run also ended quickly as she and Cummer fell in the first round to a pair from N.C. State.
The Davidson men's team returns to the courts, Nov. 2-4, with a trip to Wilmington, N.C., to play in the UNCW Invitational in their final Fall event. The Wildcat women come home and will host their second invitational, Oct. 26-27, to close out their Fall season.
