SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Wofford's Rachel Brittenham banked in a three-pointer as the shot clock was expiring with 44 ticks left to give Wofford the lead and Davidson was held scoreless in the final 1:49 of the game, suffering its first Southern Conference defeat by the count of 63-59 on Monday night at Benjamin Johnsen Arena in women's basketball action.
All five of Brittenham's field goals on the night were from three-land, including four of them coming in the second half to pace Wofford (9-5, 2-3 SoCon) with 15 points. Morgan Wrightson added 14 points and Daniella Motely had a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
Davidson (9-6, 5-1 SoCon) saw its six-game league overall winning streak halted as they were upset by the Terriers. Laura Murray (Harrisburg, Pa.) filled up the nets for a game-high 16 points, while Sophia Aleksandravicius (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) tallied a double-double with 10 points and a season-high 15 rebounds, one off her career-best.
The Wildcats, who held Wofford scoreless over an eight-minute stretch at the end of the first half and into the second, had things in control at 57-48 after Jasmine Calin (Miami, Fla.) hit a layup with 5:14 remaining to give them their biggest lead of the game. But, they were unable to close the door on the scrappy Terrier squad. The 'Cats missed three free throws in the closing minutes that would have helped seal the deal, but instead kept the door open.
Closing to within two at 57-55 on April Moorhouse's two free throws with 2:18 left, Brittenham took care of the rest. After Amanda Ottaway (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) scored to give Davidson a 59-55 lead with under two minutes, Brittenham came down on the next Wofford possession and drained a triple to make it 59-58.
Davidson then turned it over on its next possession and Wofford had the chance to take the lead. The Wildcats defense did its job forcing a tough shot with the shot clock running out on the Terriers, but Brittenham's deep trey from the right wing banked in and it was 61-59 with 44 ticks left.
After a quick Wildcat timeout, they again could not hold onto the ball, forcing a bad pass, and Wofford jumped on the loose ball. Wrightson was fouled and hit the first free throw, but missed the second, setting up a chance for Davidson to tie things up.
But, out of another timeout, Davidson could not get a clean look on a triple and Murray's driving runner was off the mark with four seconds. Wofford added one more free throw to ice the win.
Wofford raced out to a 16-10 lead six minutes into the contest after a three-pointer by Wrightson. The shooting guard added a three-point play a few minutes later and Davidson trailed 25-18.
The 'Cats calmly continued to run their offense and got things rolling with six minutes left in the half. Led by sharp-shooter Murray, Davidson turned a 30-24 deficit into a 34-32 lead going into the break. Murray, who had 12 points in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting, canned a step-back triple and two possessions later, hit a pull-up trey to knot things up at 32-all. Calin then finished out the half with a bucket inside for the two-point lead.
The Wildcats return home for a 12 p.m. Education Day game against Western Carolina on Friday, Jan. 13.
Game Notes: Davidson saw its four-game win streak in the series come to an end as it entered play having won 18 of the last 20 contests against Wofford ... at 5-0, Davidson was off to its best start in conference play since going 7-0 in 2008-09… Aleksandravicius' 11 defensive rebounds were a season-high ... the junior's double-double was the fifth of the season ... Murray has now scored in double digits in 11 straight SoCon games dating back to last year.
