DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson Wildcat volleyball team rolled to its third straight sweep and defeated the N.C. A&T Aggies, 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-9) on Saturday afternoon in the first match of the final day of play at the Wildcat Classic.
Davidson (9-3) was led by sophomore middle hitter Tindall Sewell, who was the only player in double figures on either side with 10 kills, but the Wildcats used a total team effort to overpower the depleted N.C. A&T (0-12).
Senior outside hitter Christine Perzinski added eight kills, and freshman outside hitter Rachel Earnhardt tallied six kills on nine swings. Sophomore outside hitter Megan Chamberlin was also efficient for Davidson, tallying four kills on six attacks. Junior Ariel Ley and freshman Anastasia Owen split the setting duties for the 'Cats, finishing with 12 and 13 assists, respectively, and junior libero Molly Crenshaw had 12 digs.
Tatiana Cooper led the Aggies with five kills, and setter Chelsea Fox finished with 11 assists. Devonte Reese and Murphye Williams each had six digs.
"I was proud of the team for maintaining their focus and intensity regardless of the players that we had on the floor," head coach Chris Willis said. "We were excited to get everyone some quality playing time, which will give us confidence in the future heading into conference play."
With Ley serving, Davidson won the first six points of the match with kills from sophomore opposite Taylor Pisel, Brown and Perzinski. The Wildcats pushed their lead to 14-5 on back-to-back kills by Perzinski and Sewell. The Aggies cut Davidson's lead to 20-14 with a 7-4 swing, but the Wildcats finished out the set by winning the final five points, including two aces by Perzinski, for the 25-14 win.
The Wildcats busted open a close set with a 15-0 run in the second frame. Holding a slight 6-4 advantage, Davidson rolled off 15 straight points with Pisel serving to take a commanding 21-4 lead. Kills by Sewell, Benedict and Brown finished out the 25-8 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Davidson continued its dominance in the final set, turning an 11-3 lead into a 25-9 victory to win the match. Leading 17-8, the Wildcats closed out the match with an 8-1 spurt, as Earnhardt and Smith each served three points.
Davidson returns to action tonight, taking on Norfolk State in the tournament finale at 5 p.m.
