DAVIDSON, N.C. — In a fourth straight shutout, the Davidson Wildcats defeated the Norfolk State Spartans, 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-18), to win the 2011 Wildcat Classic title Saturday evening in the tournament finale at Belk Arena.
Sophomore middle hitter Tindall Sewell was named tournament MVP, recording five blocks and six kills while hitting .556 to lead Davidson (10-3) past Norfolk State (2-7). Sophomore outside hitter Caroline Brown was named to her fourth all-tournament team in as many weekends, and junior setter Ariel Ley joined the duo on the all-tournament team.
Brown finished with a match-high 12 kills, and Ley tallied a match-high 33 assists. Senior middle hitter Madison Benedict added seven kills on 11 swings and three blocks, and senior outside hitter Christine Perzinski finished with six kills. Junior libero Molly Crenshaw led the defense with 11 digs.
Charlotte Armistead paced the Spartans with 10 kills, and all-tournament selection Kristen Burt finished with 26 assists, three kills and three digs. Tracey Copley led the defense with nine digs.
"Offensively, I thought we were firing on all cylinders tonight," head coach Chris Willis said. "Our side-out percentage was where I thought we needed it to be. I thought our first two contacts on the ball, passing and setting, were outstanding, and our hitters took care of the third contact, which resulted in one of our better performances this year."
After falling behind 4-1, the Spartans tied up the first set at 5-5 with a 4-1 run. But Davidson took control of the set with a 7-1 run to open a commanding 16-7 lead behind three kills by Sewell. The Wildcats pushed their lead to 22-11 with a 4-0 run, including a kill by senior opposite Erin Lupfer and an ace by Brown, and went on for the 25-13 win.
With a slight 7-6 lead, the Wildcats opened up a close set behind an 11-2 run and jumped out to an overwhelming 20-9 lead. Kills by Benedict, Lupfer and Perzinski helped Davidson take a 2-0 lead with the 25-14 win.
The third set played out closer than the previous two, though Davidson trailed by only a point very early in the frame. Davidson built a 14-10 lead and took firm control of the set with a 5-1 run, including points by Perzinski, Ley and Benedict, to take an 18-11 lead. The set was never in doubt for Davidson, though, and Brown put away the match-winner for the 25-18 victory.
With the tournament portion of its schedule complete, Davidson will open Southern Conference play against Furman on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Belk Arena. The Wildcats also host Wofford at 2 p.m. Saturday.
