DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson women's lacrosse head coach Kim Wayne and Director of Athletics Jim Murphy announced today that the Wildcats will be moving from the National Lacrosse Conference (NLC) and joining the Big South Conference in 2013.
The Big South Conference Council of Chief Executives approved the addition of women's lacrosse as a championship sport, starting with the 2012-13 academic year, on June 8. Davidson will be immediately eligible for the league's championship.
“We very much appreciate being invited to join the Big South and the opportunity to join other schools in our quest for a Division I Lacrosse championship,” said Murphy. “It will be exciting to participate in the Big South in the coming seasons and continue our rivalries against schools which we also compete against in other sports.”
Davidson, which joined the NLC in 2010 after playing independent for four years when it left the American Lacrosse Conference after the 2005 season, will join Big South members Campbell, Coastal Carolina, High Point, Liberty, Presbyterian and Winthrop. Of those six, High Point, Liberty and Presbyterian already play Division I women's lacrosse and compete in the NLC with the Wildcats. Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop will debut their respective women's lacrosse programs in 2013.
With seven initial members, the Big South is immediately eligible to apply for an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship, beginning with the 2013 season. The Big South will begin the process of determining scheduling, championship format and award recognitions, leading up to the inaugural 2013 campaign.
“I would like to thank the Big South for recognizing Davidson as an affiliate member,” added Wayne. “After spending my first season as an independent school, I was thankful for the opportunities Davidson was given during our time in the National Lacrosse Conference, but I'm looking forward to what is ahead. Joining the Big South will not only bring us closer to our competition, it will give us a chance to play for an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament.”
In its two years in the NLC, the Wildcats have posted a 9-4 record, reaching the NLC Tournament championship game in 2010 and the semifinals in 2011, when Davidson hosted the event at Richardson Stadium. The Wildcats will host the NLC Tournament again in 2012.
Davidson will be playing its 19th season of women's lacrosse in 2012. The program was first formed in 1994 and was independent until joining the ALC in 2002. The 2010 team won the program's 100th game in the first round of the NLC Tournament when it took home a 20-3 win vs. Howard Apr. 30.
