DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's and women's tennis teams head to Chattanooga, Tenn., where they will take part in the 2011 Southern Conference Tournament, Apr. 20-23.
The Wildcat men (6-17, 2-8 SoCon), seeded 10th, will be seeking the program's 10th tournament title, and first since 1973, while the Wildcat women (5-19, 1-9 SoCon) are looking for their first title. The women are seeded 11th for the tournament.
The men will matchup in the first round against seventh-seeded Wofford (8-12, 4-6 Socon) on Wednesday, Apr. 20, at 2 p.m.. The Terriers closed out the regular season losing four of their last five matches, including the final two at home.
Should the 'Cats advance, second-seeded College of Charleston (15-5, 9-1 SoCon) awaits them in the next round on Thursday, Apr. 21, with match time set for 3 p.m. The Cougars finished in a tie for first with Elon during the regular season for the program's first ever back-to-back regular season championships.
The women will open tournament play vs. sixth-seeded Elon (11-10, 5-5 SoCon) on Wednesday, with match time set for 10 a.m. The Phoenix won four of their last six matches to close the season, including a 6-1 decision over the Wildcats.
If the women advance, they would take on third-seeded Furman (11-10, 8-2 SoCon) on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. The Paladins and Wildcats are very familiar with each other in the SoCon Tournament, having met in the six of the last nine tournaments since 2002, including matching up in the finals three times during that span.
All matches will have live stats and can be followed at soconsports.com.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The men are 11-7 all-time vs. Wofford, including this year's 4-3 defeat back on Mar. 29. The match came down to the No. 5 singles between Walker Lyons and Drew Superstein, and a battle it was, going three sets. Superstein picked up the first set, 6-4, but Lyons went on to force the third set with his own 6-4 win in set two. The final set then went the distance in a back-and-forth affair that needed a tie-breaker to finish it. In the tie-breaker, Superstein prevailed, earning a 7-3 victory to give the Terriers the clinching team point for the win.
For the women, they had been 12-0 vs. Elon all-time prior to falling for the first time this year, 6-1, back on Apr. 6. In that match, played at Elon, Katharine Dicconson (Pacific Grove, Calif.) scored the lone win and point for 'Cats. The junior won her first singles match of the year with a straight set 6-3, 6-2 win over Jessica Margolis at No. 6.
SoCon Tournament History
Davidson men are 10-11 since 1998 in the tournament. They did not make it last year as the format was only the top-four teams advanced to the tournament. Two years ago, the 'Cats opened tournament play with a 4-3 win over Samford before falling to Furman in the next round.
The Wildcat women are 17-12 in the tournament since 1993, the first year Davidson was a part of the SoCon. In three of the past six league tournaments, they have reached the finals, facing Furman each time.
Last year they were one of four teams to reach the tournament, falling to top-seeded College of Charleston, 4-0.
