CHANDLER, Ariz. – The high-scoring duo of Davidson junior Finley Amato (Lake Forest. Ill.) and senior Christine Rua (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was named to the 2011 Longstreth/NFHCA All-South Region team, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced Thursday.
Amato and Rua are the first ever from Davidson to be named to the all-region team.
“Finley and Christine are both very deserving all-region honorees and I am thrilled that they were selected,” said head coach Ginny Turner, who guided the Wildcats to their first back-to-back winning seasons since the 'Cats posted winning marks from 1989 to 1995. “They have been the leading scorers for our team and have earned the respect of the other programs in this area. Their hard work and determination on the field has been crucial to our recent success, and I think this is just another step towards our goal of being a Top-20 program.“
Amato was honored as Davidson's first two-time winner of the NorPac East Player and Offensive Player of the Year awards earlier in the month after leading the division and finishing second in the conference with 14 goals and a team-record nine assists for 37 points. She now owns the team's top two single-season scoring totals as she scored a team-record 39 points (16 goals, 7 assists) as a sophomore. Amato also earned All-NorPac East honors for a second consecutive season and was recognized as the division's player of the week three times during the 10-week regular season.
Kayli Maxwell (2004-07) is currently Davidson's career goals (40), assists (23) and points (103) record holder, but Amato could eventually take all three records in 2012 as she has 34 goals, 17 assists and 85 points through three seasons.
Rua set career highs this past season in all three offensive categories with 12 goals and seven assists for 31 points to finish second only to Amato in the East Division and fourth overall in the conference in scoring. Her performance earned her a place on the All-NorPac East team for the first time in her career. She tied with Amato for the team lead in game-winning goals with three, including the game-winner for the 'Cats in the regular season finale over Radford to secure the No. 2 seed in the NorPac East tournament. Rua earned NorPac East Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring a hat trick and an assist in a 4-1 win over Saint Louis. She scored three goals in the NorPac tournament.
NorPac member Longwood also placed two players on the All-South Region team: Stacey de Grandhomme and Kaye Goulding.
