Amato Named NorPac East Offensive Player of the Week; 'Cats to Play UC Davis In NorPac First Round

RADFORD, Va. – Davidson junior Finley Amato earned the final NorPac East Offensive Player of the Week award of the 2011 season, as the Wildcat field hockey team will play UC Davis Thursday at 11 a.m. Pacific (2:00 p.m. Eastern) in the first round of the NorPac Championship tournament, the league office announced Monday.
Amato played a key role in securing the second seed in the NorPac East Division for Davidson, scoring a hat trick in an 8-3 win over Appalachian State Wednesday and assisting on both goals in a 2-1 win over Radford Saturday.
Wildcats were recognized as the division's offensive player of the week five times during the 10-week regular season. Amato claimed the honor three times, while senior Christine Rua and sophomore Tyler McFayden were each recognized once.
Davidson finished the regular season with a 10-7 overall record and 4-2 conference mark to finish second in the NorPac East Division. UC Davis went 4-11 overall and 2-4 in the West to earn the division's third seed.
Ninth-ranked Stanford claimed its third straight regular season NorPac West Division title, while Longwood earned the East Division crown for the first time in program history. The Cardinal are the hosts for the 2011 Championships to be held at Varsity Turf Field from Nov. 3-5.
Stanford (15-2) posted a perfect 6-0 mark in the West as it garnered its second outright regular season championship and third overall. Longwood (11-8) finished atop the East standings with a 5-1 mark to claim their first title since becoming eligible for the postseason in 2007. Their lone conference loss was to Davidson at Belk Turf Field.
The winners of the four first-round games Thursday will play semifinals matches at 1:30 p.m. PST and 4:00 p.m. PST Friday. Those contests are sandwiched between a pair consolation matches at 11:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. PST.
The championship match is slated for 1:30 p.m. PST Saturday, which will be preceded by the third place game at 11:00 a.m. PST.
The winner of the championship game will host the winner of the Atlantic-10 Conference in a NCAA play-in game on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
