DAVIDSON, N.C. — Christine Perzinski and Caroline Brown had 10 and 11 kills, respectively, and the Davidson volleyball team hit a sizzling .439 for the match in picking up a 3-0 triumph over visiting Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon in John M. Belk Arena.
The win helped the Wildcats (13-10, 3-7 SoCon) snap their six-match losing skid as they finished 1-1 over the weekend in taking sets of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-21 over Chattanooga (5-19, 3-6 SoCon).
Tindall Sewell paced the hitting attack with .750 percent, getting nine kills on 12 swings. Madison Benedict was right behind her, hitting at a .700 percent clip on 8-of-10.
Ariel Ley set up the solid hitting on the afternoon with a match-high 36 assists to go along with four service aces to tie Brown. Besides her team-high 11 kills, Brown helped to keep the volleys going on the defensive side with 13 digs.
Brown and the Wildcats found themselves down 11-5 in the first set when they caught fire and went on a 12-0 run to turn a six-point deficit into a 17-11 lead that they would never give back. Benedict had three kills during the run and Brown served all 12 points. Benedict put away four of her five swings for the set.
The second set saw both teams go back and forth as there were nine ties. Chattanooga held the biggest lead early at 12-9.
Davidson took a brief lead at 15-14 on a Sewell kill, but the Mocs tied things up on the next serve. Tied at 15-all, Benedict then sparked a 5-0 run with a kill and Ley took care of the rest with four straight service aces to give the 'Cats a 20-15 advantage. Erin Lupfer then made sure the lead would hold, getting a pair of kills in two of the next three points and Davidson finished off the set with a Sewell kill for the 25-19 win.
Davidson hit .500 for the set, going 13-for-22 with just two errors, while picking up five service aces.
In the final set, things started out fast for the Wildcats as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead forcing UTC to burn a timeout. The lead later would get cut to three at 11-8, but Perzinski pushed it back to five, 15-10, on one of four kills she had for the set. A pair of kills from Benedict and Sewell pushed the advantage to 21-14, and Benedict finished off the match with a kill from Ley for the 25-21 win.
Both Sewell and Brown each had five kills in the set as Davidson put away 18 of its 29 swings for a .483 hitting clip.
The 'Cats, in the midst of four-match homestand, will next host College of Charleston for Parents Weekend at Davidson on Saturday, Oct. 29.
