Charleston used a 9-2 run to open a 14-8 lead in the opening set. The Wildcats responded with four straight points, including a kill from senior outside hitter Christine Perzinski and an ace by Brown to narrow the gap, 14-11, but the Cougars answered with a 5-2 spurt of their own and stayed in control of the set. The Wildcats fought off four set points behind kills by Brown and senior opposite Erin Lupfer and a block by senior middle hitter Madison Benedict, but Kelly Kolich and Elyse Chubb's block finally ended the set, 25-21 in the Cougars' favor.
The teams traded points to open the second set before Davidson opened a 10-7 lead on a kill by Perzinski. Back-to-back kills by Sarah Havel and a Wildcat hitting error knotted the set at 10, and the teams were tied five times and as late as 17-17 in the back-and-forth battle. The Cougars took control with three straight scores to take a 20-17 lead, but the Wildcats responded with a pair of kills by Perzinski and Sewell to get within a point. Charleston won four of the next six points, and Davidson fought off three set points before White punched home the winner, 25-22, to put the Cougars ahead 2-0 in the match.
Davidson battled back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the score with three straight kills from Brown, Perzinski and Sewell. The teams traded points with five ties, the last at 11-11 when the Cougars took the lead for good on consecutive kills by Kolich and White. Sewell put the 'Cats back within a score, but Charleston opened a 17-14 lead, which proved enough, and Havel and Davis went back-to-back to finish off the set, 25-19, and the match.
Davidson returns to action, hosting Western Carolina at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 7 at Belk Arena, before a three-match road swing.
