RADFORD, Va. – Davidson's Christine Rua was named the NorPac East Co-Offensive Player of the Week, while goalkeeper Sarah Fisher was named the NorPac East Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Rua assisted on a goal in a NorPac East match at Appalachian State last Tuesday and then turned in one of the best single-game offensive performances in Davidson field hockey history Saturday against Saint Louis. The senior factored in on all four Davidson goals in the game, assisting on the first and then scoring the next three for seven total points. The hat trick was not only the first of Rua's career, but it was also the first multi-point game of her career. With seven total points, her single-game performance was the best in Wildcats history since Kayli Maxwell scored 11 points and Tiffany Homan scored seven points in the same game against Catawba, Sept. 21, 2004. It was also the first Wildcat hat trick since four different players accomplished the feat in 2007.
Rua shared the offensive honor this week with Longwood's Stacy de Grandhomme, who tallied a hat trick against Pacific. The 'Cats have claimed or shared the award in four of the seven weeks this season as junior Finley Amato has earned it twice and sophomore Tyler McFayden earned it following her overtime goal at William & Mary.
Fisher, a junior, was named the NorPac East Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after holding both Appalachian State and Saint Louis to just one goal. The lone goal allowed to Saint Louis came on a penalty stroke.
Davidson plays another non-conference match tonight at Wake Forest and then returns to NorPac play Friday at Radford. The Wildcats next play on Belk Turf Field Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. against Liberty.
