RADFORD, Va. – After going 3-0 for the week of September 20-26 to improve to 8-2, Davidson field hockey claimed all three NorPac East awards for the week as Finley Amato was named the NorPac East Offensive Player of the Week, Sarah Fisher was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Brooke Osborne was named the Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
This is the first time Davidson has claimed all three awards in the same week since entering the NorPac Field Hockey Conference in 2000.
The offensive award is Amato's first in the category and first conference honor since being named a NorPac East Rookie of the Week twice last season. Fisher has now won the weekly defensive honor twice this season, while the rookie award is Osborne's first.
Amato, a sophomore forward from Lake Forest, Ill., led Davidson in scoring with two goals and an assist last week. After scoring the Wildcats' first goal against Richmond Saturday, she helped draw a turnover in the final seconds of regulation and sent a perfect pass to junior Christine Rua (Pittsburgh, Pa.) for the game-tying goal with exactly one second remaining. The 'Cats took advantage of the opportunity and won in overtime, 3-2. Amato scored Davidson's lone goal against Georgetown Sunday and came through in the game-deciding penalty stroke competition to break a 1-1 tie. As Davidson's last shooter, Amato converted her attempt to ice a 4-2 shootout win.
Amato is the NorPac scoring leader with eight goals and four assists for 20 points. Her average of 2.00 points per game ranks 27th in the nation.
Fisher, a sophomore goalkeeper from Fredericksburg, Va., was a vital part of Davidson's success for the week, as all three wins were decided by one goal. In the Wildcats' conference opener at Radford, Fisher set a new career high for saves with 10 to earn her third shutout of the season (the team's fourth) to allow Davidson to take a 1-0 victory. She followed that performance with a career-best 11-save performance in the overtime victory over Richmond. Fisher came up big again the following day against Georgetown, making a game-saving stop on a breakaway in the second overtime period and making a key save in the penalty stroke competition.
Fisher ranks second in the conference and 14th in the nation in save percentage at .775. She first won the NorPac East defensive award in the second week of the season after earning a shutout win over Lafayette.
Osborne, a freshman midfielder from Fort Worth, Texas, is the only newcomer that has been able to crack the starting lineup for the Wildcats this season, doing so in all 10 games. She came through in the penalty stroke competition against Georgetown, converting her attempt as Davidson's second shooter. Osborne has tallied two assists so far this season, both coming in Davidson's 5-0 win over St. Francis.
Davidson will return to NorPac competition Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting Longwood at Belk Turf Field.
