CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Davidson field hockey team received five points in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Top 20 Poll, released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Tuesday, earning votes for the fourth consecutive week.
The poll is voted upon by NFHCA member coaches.
Davidson went 3-0 last week to improve to 8-2 in one of the best starts for the team in program history. Davidson's top-four goal-scorers this season, Finley Amato (20 points), Christine Rua (15), Jennie Mostellar (14) and Gray Robinson (12), have all either matched or surpassed their career-best single-season scoring totals. Davidson has scored three or more goals in eight of 10 games, putting them on pace to break the school single-season scoring record of 52 goals, but has won both of the games in which they only scored one goal.
Averaging 3.1 goals per game, the 'Cats rank 13th in the nation in the category.
Stanford was the only other NorPac member recognized in the poll moving up to 16th from 18th. California and Radford had been receiving votes, but dropped out this week.
Wake Forest, to whom Davidson lost, 5-3, is ranked ninth. Penn, whom Davidson defeated 4-3, received 14 points, while Richmond, whom Davidson defeated Saturday, received one vote.
Future Davidson opponents Maine (Oct. 11) and VCU (Oct. 16) rank just outside the Top 20. Maine received 107 points to be effectively ranked 22nd, while VCU received 48 points to be effectively ranked 26th.
Davidson will return to NorPac competition Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting Longwood at Belk Turf Field.
