CHANDLER, Ariz. – Boasting the ninth-best offense so far this season, the Davidson field hockey team received votes in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Top 20 National Coaches Poll for the second consecutive week.
In the latest edition of the poll released Tuesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, Davidson totaled five points, an increase of one point from the previous week, and moved ahead of NorPac East division rival Radford.
The poll is voted upon by NFHCA member coaches.
The Wildcats are 5-1 and are off to their best start ever under head coach Ginny Turner, and the team's best since 1999. Averaging 3.83 points per game so far this season, Davidson presently ranks ninth in the nation in the category. Team and NorPac scoring leader sophomore Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) ranks 19th in the nation in points per game with 2.33.
Davidson faces strong competition within the conference, though. NorPac West division member Stanford moved up to No. 16 in the nation, while California and NorPac East member Radford are both receiving votes, earning 11 points and one point, respectively.
No. 7 Wake Forest will take on the 'Cats at Belk Turf Field Friday at 6 p.m.
Other Davidson 2010 opponents receiving votes include Richmond (Sept. 25) and VCU (Oct. 16). Penn, whom Davidson earned their most recent win over, is also receiving votes.
