Field Hockey Announces Class of 2014

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Looking to carry the momentum from a strong finish to the 2009 season into 2010, head coach Ginny Sutton announced the five-member Davidson field hockey Class of 2014 Wednesday.
The class includes one local product from Charlotte Country Day: forward/midfielder Tyler McFayden. Defender/midfielder Kelsey Dwyer, goalkeeper Carolyn Macek and midfielder Sydney Schreiner all hail from Virginia, while midfielder/forward Brooke Osborne will arrive at Davidson from Fort Worth, Texas.
"I am very excited about this group of incoming student-athletes,” said Sutton, who will be entering her fourth season at the helm of the Wildcats. “These five young ladies truly exemplify the integrity and ambition that Davidson strives for. I am confident these new Wildcats will expand our strengths and add to the intensity and dedication the current team has shown this spring. They have the ability to contribute immediately all over the field, in the classroom and throughout the Davidson community."

Kelsey Dwyer
Position: Defender/Midfielder
Hometown: Midlothian, Va.
High School: James River
Coach Sutton: "Kelsey is a solid player with great vision on the field. She has a powerful hit and has the ability to be a key factor in our defensive unit this fall."
Versatile starter for James River H.S. playing defense, midfield, and forward … all-district scholar-athlete … team reached Dominion District finals in 2009 after winning title in 2008 … 2008 District Tournament AAA Champions and VHSL Regional Tournament Semifinalists … competed three years in National Field Hockey Festival with Colonial Field Hockey … competed in National Indoor Tournament U16 Spartan Elite … competed three years in USFHA Futures and the Virginia Commonwealth Games … also lettered in lacrosse … distinguished Dean's List student all four years … member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club … selected to the James River High School Center for Leadership and International Relations.
Carolyn Macek
Position: Goalkeeper
Hometown: Clifton, Va.
High School: Centreville
Coach Sutton: “Carolyn is a smart and athletic goalkeeper. She has good fundamentals and is quick on her feet. Her coachability and willingness to learn will make her a contender for time in the goal this fall.”
Drew several honors after captaining team during senior season … named a Virginia All-State honorable mention … named to Washington Post All-Met second team and Fairfax County first team … All-Northern Region first team and Concorde District first team … team MVP and also boasted the team's best GPA ... team's most improved player after sophomore season … four-year varsity player … earned scholar-athlete award each season … 2009 National Futures Championship alternate … three-year U.S. Field Hockey Futures participant … also a three-year starter on the varsity lacrosse team … member of Art Honor Society and National Honor Society … working towards Gold Award in Girl Scouts.
Tyler McFayden
Position: Forward/Midfielder

Coach Sutton: "Tyler is a natural athlete who can carry the ball well under pressure. Her speed and tenacity will make an immediate impact on the field."
All-state performer at Charlotte Country Day under former Davidson head coach Lisa Thompson … two-time all-conference selection … helped lead team to a state title in 2009 and also a member of the 2007 state championship team … named to National Field Hockey Coaches Association High School National Academic Squad … three-year member of varsity field hockey squad … a state qualifier and all-conference performer for the track team ... member of basketball team … two-time selection to Charlotte Weekly Super First Team … five-year U.S. Field Hockey Futures participant … member of Cum Laude Society in top-10 of graduating class … National Honor Society … junior class president … volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters and Special Olympics.
Brooke Osborne

Coach Sutton: "Brooke is an all around outstanding athlete. She truly exemplifies a midfield player with strong defensive skills and the ability to find the back of the cage on attack. Her flexibility on the field could lend her to see time in many different positions this fall."
Four-year varsity starter for Trinity Valley … selected to 2009 All-West Region team … received all-region and all-conference awards in three seasons … competed in the 2007 and 2008 AAU Junior Olympic Games … selected for Futures Elite in 2009 … named team captain senior year … elected team MVP junior and senior year … named Offensive Player of the Year all four years … also a four-year varsity starter in soccer … named team captain her junior and senior year … team MVP junior and senior year … member of National Honor Society, National Spanish Society, and the National Society of High School Scholars … AP Scholar with Honor Award her junior year.
Sydney Schreiner
Position: Midfielder

Coach Sutton: "Sydney is a smart player with excellent fundamentals. She really understands the game and plays a patient and composed style of hockey that will enable her fit in right away with our team."
All-state, all-metro and all-league selection during senior season at St. Catherine's … led team to LIS regular season championship … two-year team captain … three-year starter … selected to Futures Elite 2010, National Futures Championships '09 and Futures regional tournament 2006-09 … a 2009-10 Lexus Pursuit of Perfection Award nominee … selected to the 2009 NFHCA High School National Academic Squad … also played varsity basketball and lacrosse … honor roll student … president of math club senior year … served as peer adviser junior year … acolyte at church.
