DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey head coach Ginny Sutton announced the team's 2010 spring schedule on Wednesday.
“We are excited to face other opponents and really see how far we have come this spring,” said Sutton. “The team chemistry is amazing right now and it is fun working with a group so positive and dedicated to each other and our improvement on the field.”
The Wildcats will begin preparations for the 2010 season following the Wildcat Challenge Tournament for high school players on Saturday, Mar. 20. The 'Cats will host a spring play day at Belk Turf Field on Saturday, Mar. 27, which will include Davidson, Appalachian State, Radford, a Davidson alumnae team and the Charlotte club team.
On Saturday, Apr. 10, William & Mary will host an Alumnae Tournament that will feature Davidson, VCU, Radford, William & Mary and a William & Mary alumnae team. Sutton and assistant coach Becky Van Zee, 2005 and 2007 William & Mary graduates, respectively, will both compete for the William & Mary alumnae team. The tournament, played at Busch Field in Williamsburg, Va., will serve as a fundraising opportunity for the American Cancer Society.
Davidson will then face NorPac foe Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. Wednesday, Apr. 14.
The Wildcats are looking to carry the momentum from their strong finish to the 2009 season into 2010. Davidson won three of their last four games, with the lone loss coming in overtime to California in the first round of the NorPac Tournament. The 'Cats are losing just two starters to graduation.
“Our practices have been going very well and everyone has carried the excitement of the end of the season to this spring,” added Sutton. “The freshmen have really developed their skills and the upperclassmen have become confident in their play. They are all continuing to work extremely hard at practice and I can see the lifting and conditioning is really paying off on the field.”
