DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore forward Finley Amato led Davidson's four All-NorPac East selections, as she claimed both the 2010 NorPac East Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year awards at the NorPac Field Hockey Championship Banquet Wednesday night in Lilly Family Gallery on the campus of Davidson College. After guiding the Wildcats to their second NorPac East Division title, Ginny Turner was named NorPac Coach of the Year, becoming the first Davidson head coach to earn the honor.
Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) was joined on the All-NorPac East team by three teammates: junior Steph Meador (Hummelstown, Pa.), senior Jennie Mostellar (New Bern, N.C) and senior Clare Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.). Amato and Meador were first-time selections while Perry and Mostellar were named to the team for the second consecutive season.
Sophomore Madison Parrish (Chester, Va.) also received the Julie Nagel Extraordinary Teammate Award for exhibiting extraordinary care and support of her teammates, while demonstrating a genuine love for the sport and her academic institution. This award, which recognizes a NorPac sophomore, was established in 2005 by Appalachian State University in memory of former Mountaineer Julie Nagel.
Amato leads the NorPac in scoring with 15 goals and five assists for 35 points, and was named the NorPac East Offensive Player of the Week three times during the 10-week regular season. She joins Kayli Maxwell as the second NorPac Player of the Year from Davidson. Maxwell won the award in 2007 after scoring 35 points, including 13 goals, to become Davidson's all-time leader in points (103), goals (40) and assists (23). With 44 career points (19 goals, 6 assists), Amato is currently Davidson's active career-scoring leader and needs just one more point to tie the Davidson single-season record for points scored (36), which is currently held by Cathy Inabet (1980) and 2000 NorPac Offensive Player of the Year Lea Jager. Jaeger and Amato are the only two Wildcats to win the Offensive Player of the Year Award since Davidson joined the NorPac in 2000.
Amato came through in the clutch several times during the season. Against Richmond on Sept. 25, she scored the game's first goal and created a turnover that allowed Davidson to tie the game at 2-2 with exactly one second remaining. The very next day against Georgetown, she scored the 'Cats' lone regulation goal before icing the win in the game-deciding stroke-off. During the next match against conference-foe Longwood, her two goals ignited second-half comeback win. Amato scored three goals and an assist in Davidson's final two regular season contests, including an overtime goal against Radford, to help Davidson clinch the NorPac East Division for the first time since 2003.
Turner, in her fourth year at the helm, has guided Davidson to their most overall wins since 1994 and best season ever in NorPac play. The 'Cats claimed their second NorPac East title with a 5-1 record and a prolific offensive attack, breaking the previous school single-season scoring record of 52 with 56 goals. Five of the top-10 point scorers in the NorPac during the regular season were Wildcats. The 'Cats also clamped down defensively, allowing one less goal per game than they did a year ago and posting five shutouts. Davidson's success garnered national attention as the Wildcats received votes in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Top-20 Coaches Poll for four consecutive weeks during the season and again in the final week of the regular season. The Wildcats received votes for the first-time ever in 2008 during her second year as head coach.
Mostellar continued her strong finish to the 2009 season into to 2010, claiming the first East Offensive Player of the Week award of the season after scoring four goals and an assist in a pair of 5-0 wins over Bryant and St. Francis to start the season. She ranked among the conference scoring leaders throughout the season, finishing second to only her teammate Amato with nine goals and seven assists for 25 points- all career highs.
Perry has been one of Davidson's most important players, contributing at both ends of the field and scoring six goals. She scored in back-to-back games against nationally-ranked Wake Forest and at Radford. Her goal at Radford was a game-winner as the 'Cats won, 1-0. Perry converted her attempt in the 'Cats stroke-off win over Georgetown after making a game-saving defensive save in overtime, and she scored the game-tying goal the very next game in their 6-4 comeback win over Longwood.
Meador has led a Wildcats' defensive effort that is allowing one less goal per game than the year before. She made a defensive save at Brown and has used her speed and stick skills to blunt numerous attacks before they reach the circle.
Davidson will host the NorPac Conference Tournament Thursday-Saturday and enter as the East Division's top seed. The Wildcats will play the fourth seed from the West Division, Pacific, in the first round Thursday at 4 p.m.
