RADFORD, Va. – Finley Amato and Sarah Fisher were named the NorPac East Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for all games played October 4-10, the league office announced Monday.
Amato, a sophomore forward from Lake Forest, Ill., scored twice in Davidson's 5-3 win over Brown Saturday. Fisher, a sophomore goalkeeper from Fredericksburg, Va., preserved the Wildcats' lead by matching her career high for saves with 11, including nine in the first half.
Amato finished the week with a four-game goal scoring streak and ranked 10th in the nation in goals per game, averaging one. She leads the team and NorPac with 12 goals and four assists for 28 points, and needs six more goals and eight points to equal the respective team records in those categories.
This is the second time this season Amato has earned the offensive player of the week award. She was recognized for the week of September 20-26 after scoring two goals and an assist in close wins over Richmond and Georgetown.
Fisher has now claimed three of the seven weekly defensive honors from the NorPac this season in her first season as the starting goalkeeper. She finished the week ranked 13th in the nation in save percentage at .762 and 16th in the nation in saves per game at 6.67.
Fisher was also recognized by the conference during the week of September 20-26 after double-digit save performances against Radford and Richmond, a shutout against Radford and saves in extra time against Richmond and Georgetown. Her first career conference honor came following the second week of the season when she earned a shutout win over Lafayette.
The Wildcats will look to return to the win column today at 12 p.m. when they play at Sacred Heart to wrap up their three-game New England road trip. Davidson saw their five-game winning streak come to an end Monday in a 2-0 neutral site loss to Maine.
“One of our goals was to come out hard and put Maine on their heels right away, but they beat us to it.” said head coach Ginny Turner following the game. “We played flat in the first half but had a much stronger second half, out shooting and out covering them, but still never found the goal. It was frustrating and we are disappointed with the loss, but glad we have one more opportunity for a win on this trip.”
The Wildcats return to Belk Turf Field Saturday, hosting VCU at 12 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the regular season.
