FARMVILLE, Va. – A pair of mid-game goals from Longwood's Julia Hernandez proved to be the difference as the Davidson field hockey team was defeated, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Longwood's Athletics Complex. The Wildcats fall to 2-8 overall, 0-2 in the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference, while Longwood improved to 3-5, 1-0 NorPac.
The 'Cats scored first but Longwood responded with three consecutive goals. Freshman Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) scored early in the second half to bring Davidson within one, but the Lancers defense was able to stop Davidson's attack and secure the win.
Junior Courtney Tobe (Prospect, Ky.) gave Davidson an early 1-0 lead seven minutes into the game with her first goal of the season. Tobe slipped the ball past Longwood goalkeeper Erin Bollinger from about five-yards out on the unassisted tally.
Longwood answered with two goals to close the half. At 30:56, Taylor Bender pushed a loose ball in front of the net in to even the score at one. Exactly eight minutes later, Melissa Strickland fed Hernandez with a pass from the right side of the net. Hernandez got the ball past senior goalkeeper Christa Goeke (Princeton, N.J.) to give Longwood a 2-1 lead.
Hernandez scored the game-winner less than 10 minutes into the second half. The Lancers' two-goal advantage was short-lived as Amato's goal from sophomore Christine Rua (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came less than two minutes later, but Davidson was unable to even the score.
Goeke made five saves while Bollinger made four. Longwood outshot the 'Cats 14-12. Davidson held an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.
The Wildcats will return home to Belk Turf Field for their next two matches. On Thursday they will host NorPac rival UC Davis at 6 p.m. On Saturday, they will host nearby Catawba at 12 p.m.
