
Field Hockey Falls 2-1 in Season Opener

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson field hockey team was unable to mount a late second-half comeback and dropped a 2-1 decision to Ball State Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field in the season-opener for both teams.
Ball State (1-0) struck first in the contest, getting on the scoreboard at the 18:29 mark of the first half when Brooke Macgillivary fired a shot into the upper left corner of the goal from the top of the circle to put BSU up, 1-0.
The Wildcats responded less than a minute later when junior Ellie Szykowny tied the game at one with her first goal of the season. Szykowny collected the rebound of a shot by teammate Amanda Vrendenburgh on the left side of the cage and put the second-chance shot into the back of the net for the equalizer.
Neither team could break the stalemate until the 47th minute of the contest when Ball State's Hannah Jones deflected a shot from the top of the circle just past Davidson (0-1) goalkeeper Christa Goeke and into the goal for the game-winner.
Ball State held a 10-8 advantage on shots for the contest, and had five of those shots on goal compared to two by Davidson. Both teams had four penalty corners overall. Goeke made a pair of stops for the 'Cats, with BSU goalkeeper Tiffany Shfflett recording five saves.
Davidson will look to bounce back and pick up their first win of the 2009 season when they take on Sacred Heart on Sunday, Aug. 30 at Belk Turf Field. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
