Vitaly Radsky Leads 'Cats at Hokie Open

SALEM, Va. – Junior Vitaly Radsky advanced to the quarterfinals at 141 pounds to lead the Davidson wrestling team in the Hokie Open on Sunday at the Salem Civic Center. Nine Wildcats competed in the season-opening tournament.
Radsky advanced to the quarterfinals on a pair of decisions and a forfeit before North Carolina's Danny Lopes narrowly defeated Radsky, 8-4.
Freshman Matt Zarth and senior Ben Altman both performed well at 125.
Zarth won his round of 64 match, but was sent to the consolation bracket by Virginia's Matt Snyder, the fourth seed in the bracket and eventual third-place finisher. Zarth then pinned Michael Payne in 2:25 and won 10-4 decisions over Virginia's Gabriel Gomez and Gardner-Webb's Michael Slaughter before Brian Bokoski of North Carolina halted Zarth's run in the consolation quarterfinals.
Altman won 16-0 over King College's Eddie Long, but was sent to the consolation bracket by Duke's Peter Terrezza, the seventh seed in the 125-pound bracket, 4-2. Altman won 19-1 over Appalachian State's Austin Annas, the bracket's eighth seed, before dropping a 6-2 decision to North Carolina's Manuel Ramirez in the consolation pre-quarterfinal.
Junior Joe McGinley (157) and freshman Ike Crews (184) both scored falls in their opening matches. McGinley pinned Rodin Ndandula of Old Dominion in 1:32. Crews pinned Newberry's TJ Cayruth in 1:37.
Freshmen Brent Mowry (157) and Chris Cirenza (165) also made their collegiate debuts. Sophomore Jorge Estrada competed at 174, while junior Charlie Wolff competed at 285.
The tournament featured double-elimination 64-man brackets, with single elimination in the round of 64 for brackets in which more than 32 wrestlers competed.
A total of 379 wrestlers competed in the non-team scoring event. Appalachian State, Arrichion Wrestlng Club, Campbell, Campbellsville, Cavalier WC, Cumberland, Duke, Gardner-Webb, George Mason, Kent State, King College, Liberty, Newberry, Old Dominion, Ohio University, Radford University WC, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Virginia, Chattanooga, VA Elite Wrestling Club, Virginia Tech (VT) and Virginia Military Institute were all represented.
The Wildcats will next compete at the Pembroke Open, hosted by UNC Pembroke, on Saturday.
