STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Liz Luckey (Richmond, Va.) of the Davidson field hockey team was named to the 2009 NorPac All-Tournament team following the conclusion of the tournament on Saturday.
Luckey continued to anchor the Davidson midfield throughout the tournament, registering three shots on goal in two games. The 'Cats lost a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to eventual conference finalist California before defeating UC Davis, 2-1 in overtime, in a consolation match on Friday.
Xanthe Travlos of the NorPac champion Stanford Cardinal was named as the NorPac Most Valuable Player.
The all-tournament honor was Luckey's second NorPac of the week. Luckey received the Sheryl Johnson Academic Award on Thursday at the annual NorPac Conference Awards Banquet. She sported a 3.85 GPA for the 2008-09 academic year and is ranked in the top-10 percent of Davidson's senior class. A three-time NFHCA National Academic squad selection, Luckey earned a Dean Rusk scholarship to study in India and currently is a candidate for the Fulbright program, the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government.
On the field, Luckey was a key player during her career at Davidson, starting 63 of 74 games played. Frequently playing the entire game, Liz was a versatile athlete, playing all across the midfield. She scored three-career goals, including one this past season against Catawba. Liz also excelled on defense tallying four defensive saves.
After struggling early in the 2009 season, the 'Cats improved in the second half and nearly eliminated California in the first round of the NorPac tournament. Davidson finished with a 7-12 record.
"We put together some great passing patterns and had better movement on the field in the tournament than we had all season," said head coach Ginny Sutton. "The improvements we have made in the last part of the season showed in the tournament, and I am really proud of the team. They played hard, aggressive and they played with heart."
The 'Cats will now look forward to the 2010 season. Davidson will lose just three seniors to graduation and is expected to return 17 players.
"I give a special thank you to the seniors whose devotion and hard work over the four years really paid off," said Sutton. "They are three very amazing women who will find great success in their next endeavors."
"We're also very excited about our prospects for next season. We're returning our top scorers and our younger players gained valuable experience this past season. Our freshmen saw a lot of playing time and some of our sophomores stepped into larger roles for the first time. The team really came together at the end of the season, so we'll look to carry that momentum into 2010."
