STANFORD, Calif. – Three members of the Davidson field hockey team were honored with NorPac conference awards on Wednesday night, as juniors Clare Perry and Jennie Mostellar were named to the All-NorPac Second Team and senior Liz Luckey received the Sheryl Johnson Academic Award at the annual NorPac Conference Awards Banquet held at Stanford University's Arrillaga Family Sports Center.
Mostellar (New Bern, N.C.) and Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.) hooked up for four of Davidson's nine goals scored in the last two games. Mostellar scored a combined three goals and two assists, while Perry totaled two goals and three assists. The duo is tied for the team scoring lead with 12 points.
Luckey, a double major in French and religion, holds a 3.795 overall GPA. The senior midfielder from Richmond, Va. sported a 3.85 GPA for the 2008-09 academic year and is ranked in the top-10 percent of Davidson's senior class. A three-time NFHCA National Academic squad selection, Luckey earned a Dean Rusk scholarship to study in India and currently is a candidate for the Fulbright program, the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government.
The NorPac academic award is given in honor of former Stanford head coach Sheryl Johnson. Luckey is the second consecutive recipient from Davidson, as since-graduated Tyler Kirkland received the honor last year.
Mostellar enjoyed a breakout season, scoring a team leading five goals, along with two assists. She scored the 'Cats lone goal in a loss to No. 18 Indiana and also scored in a win over UC Davis. Her finest game came against Appalachian State when she had a hand in all five goals. Scoring one goal and assisting on two others, Mostellar also drew a foul that led to a penalty stroke goal and saw a rebound from one of her shots get knocked in for another Wildcat goal. Mostellar was also a major factor against Longwood, scoring Davidson's first and final goals in the 4-2 win, which secured the NorPac East third seed. She started in 12 of 17 contests for the season.
Perry leads the team with six assists and has scored three goals. She found her scoring touch against Catawba recording a goal and two assists in a 7-0 win. Perry then registered an assist in a hard-fought match against Radford before scoring the first two goals in the 5-2 win over Appalachian State and adding an assist on an insurance goal. Against Longwood in the regular season finale, Perry assisted on the opening tally and an insurance goal late to help the 'Cats secure the East division's third seed. Perry has been a constant presence on the field starting all 17 games in 2009 and appearing in all 22 the previous season.
On the field, Luckey has been a key player during her career at Davidson, starting 61 of 72 games played. Frequently playing the entire game, Liz has been a versatile athlete, playing all across the midfield. She has scored three-career goals, including one this season against Catawba. Liz has also excelled on defense tallying four defensive saves, including two this season. The first this season came against No. 18 Indiana, and the second aided the 'Cats in their 5-2 win over Appalachian State. Last season, Luckey scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift the Wildcats to a 3-2 victory over Appalachian State an elimination game at the NorPac Tournament.
The 'Cats will face California in the first round of the 2009 NorPac Championships in Stanford on Thursday night 6:30 p.m. PST (9:30 EST).
