Eight ‘Cats Earn 2009 Pioneer Football League Honors

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Eight Davidson players have earned 2009 Pioneer Football League honors, the league announced today.
Kirk Benedict, Kenny Mantuo, Mark Iafrate and Andrew Wohler were named second-team All-PFL. Alex Griswold, Daniel Astrop, Tyler Lemons and Peter Kidwell earned honorable mention honors.
Benedict was named second-team All-PFL for the second time in his career. The senior fullback rushed 10 times for 40 yards and caught seven passes for 60 markers. He helped the Wildcats average 146.1 yards a game on the ground.
Mantuo led Davidson in rushing with 626 yards on 139 carries with five touchdowns, and his 62.6 yards a game ranked fifth in the league. The junior also caught 10 passes for 90 yards.
Iafrate started all 10 games and anchored an offensive line that helped the Wildcats average 146.1 yards a contest on the ground. The senior center earned Honorable Mention All-PFL honors a season ago.
Wohler ranked second in the league in punting, averaging 40.5 yards a kick, and tied for third in the conference in placing 22 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line. The junior also ran for first downs on two fake punt attempts this season, including a 35-yard scamper at San Diego, which was tied for the second-longest run from scrimmage on the season for the Wildcats.
Griswold ranked fifth in the PFL in sacks (5.5) and tackles for loss (12) as the senior defensive lineman posted 38 tackles on the season, including 25 solo hits. His four forced fumbles were tied for tops in the conference, and he was named PFL Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 10.
Astrop led the Wildcats and ranked 12th in the league in tackles (68). The junior linebacker had 3.5 sacks, 5.0 tackles for loss, four pass breakups and two forced fumbles.
Lemons finished the campaign with 67 tackles, good for 14th in the conference. The senior linebacker, who earned second-team All-PFL accolades in 2008, posted 4.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, an interception, a fumble recovery and two pass breakups.
Kidwell ranked third in the league with three interceptions, and his 105 return yards on the picks led the conference. The sophomore defensive back also had 53 tackles, including 35 solo stops. He added two tackles for loss and two pass breakups and was named PFL Defensive Player of the Week Nov. 7 after returning an interception for a touchdown at San Diego.
The Wildcats finished the campaign with a 3-7 overall record and a 3-5 mark in conference play.
