DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson field hockey team was unable to overcome a pair of first-half goals by the Monmouth Hawks, falling 3-0 in a Sunday afternoon contest at Belk Turf Field.
Monmouth's offense was fueled by a trio of unassisted goals in the game, with two coming off of deflected rebounds that found their way to the stick of a Hawk in front of the net. Molly Passearella was the beneficiary of the first deflected score, when she corralled the rebounded shot of teammate Theresa Burek and converted to put the Hawks up 1-0. Five minutes later, Aubrey Clark scored in an almost identical fashion, taking her shot from the left side that bounced off the turf and over the Davidson defense into the goal.
After the two teams battled for the remainder of the first half and into the second half, Monmouth (1-8) was able to put in an insurance score at the 56:08 mark of the second frame via Janine Rini's drive and shot from the right side of the goal into the opposite corner of the net, to put the Hawks up 3-0.
Despite falling in the game, Davidson (3-7) controlled the stat sheet, out-shooting Monmouth 7-6, and recording six penalty corners to the Hawks' four. Wildcat goalkeeper Christa Goeke recored three saves in just over 61 minutes of action between the pipes, #with Brittany Rollek# making an appearance for the final 8:48 of play.
A pair of freshman led the 'Cats' offense, with Clare Perry and Kathelijn van der Ven each taking a team-high two shots. Liz Luckey, Lisa Landoe, and Sarah Addision recorded one scoring chance apiece.
The 'Cats will now set their sights on a five-game road trip to open the month of October, beginning with a journey up the mountain to take on NorPac rival Appalachian State on Oct. 1. The critical conference matchup is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. at ASU's Kidd-Brewer Stadium.
