Volleyball Drops Four-Set Affair To UNC Greensboro

DAVIDSON, N.C. —
The Davidson volleyball team dropped its fifth Southern Conference match of the season, falling at home to UNC Greensboro on Thursday evening, 3-1 (25-19, 12-25, 25-14, 25-10), in front of a crowd of 833 at Belk Arena.

Davidson, which came in winners of four of its last five matches, dropped to 9-13 overall and 4-5 in league play, while UNCG ran its record to 14-7 overall and 6-2 in the SoCon.

Freshman middle blocker Madison Benedict paced the Wildcats, finishing with nine kills and hitting .263. Sophomore outside hitter Sarabeth Peele also had nine kills, while freshman Christine Perzinski tallied eight kills. Sophomore setter Hayley Lawson finished with 32 assists, and classmate Jennifer Chamblee led the defense with 14 digs.

Kayren Finney led Greensboro to the win, finishing with 10 kills and hitting .643 (10-1-14). Kaitlyn Nortz and Kimiko Naito split the setting duties, finishing with 13 and 20 assists, respectively. Catherine Hanners finished with a team-high 15 digs, and Alissa Beaudway totaled seven blocks.

Set one had both teams open up play at 4-4 before UNC Greensboro went on an 11-3 run to take a 15-7 advantage, finished off by a Spartan block. The Wildcats were able to cut the lead down to five, 18-13, before UNCG pushed through with the set one win, 25-19.

Davidson took control early in set two, racing out to a 11-3 lead thanks to some solid defense with three blocks, while senior Kittery Neale earned a couple of kills to pace the offense. Neale went on to pick up six of her seven kills on the night in the second set as Davidson hit .650 (13-0-20) in cruising to the 25-12 win to even the match.

The Spartans put the match away in the next two sets by hitting .464 in the third set and .545 in the fourth ,picking up the 25-14 and 25-10 wins. Kayren Finney of the Spartans combined to hit 6-of-8 without an error in the two sets and three other UNCG players had at least three kills combined in the wins.

The Wildcats return to action tomorrow afternoon, hosting the Elon Phoenix in a 2 p.m. contest at Belk Arena.
