FARMVILLE, Va. — Senior forward Kayli Maxwell scored a pair of goals and sophomore keeper Christa Goeke tallied 12 saves to preserve Davidson's 4-1 win over the Longwood Lancers on Saturday afternoon in NorPac field hockey action.
With the win, Davidson improves to 3-1, while Longwood falls to 0-6.
"We came out hard today, ready for a good game," head coach Ginny Sutton said. "We played a solid 70 minutes of hockey and, we did an excellent job keeping possession of the ball and working together on the field. Our defense had some very strong moments, and our attack finished well in the circle."
Maxwell scored the first goal of the game on a penalty stroke, winning her one-on-one with Lancer goalie Avanell Schmitz, to put the 'Cats up 1-0 in the 20th minute.
Senior forward Eleanor Cowley notched the team's second, connecting on a long pass from sophomore defender Lisa Landoe, exactly four minutes later.
In the 33rd minute, Maxwell hooked up with junior midfielder Britti Himelfarb, who dodged Schmitz and stuck in the 'Cats third goal, to send Davidson into the locker room with a 3-0 lead at the break.
The 'Cats held a slight 8-7 edge on shots in the first half and had a 4-2 edge on penalty corners.
After the break, the teams battled for 20 minutes with neither able to score. Maxwell tacked on another score with just under 15 minutes remaining to extend the 'Cats lead to 4-0, but Lauren Sullivan put the Lancers on the board a little over a minute later to bust up Davidson's shutout bid.
Longwood outshot the 'Cats 19-17, but Davidson held a 5-3 advantage on penalty corners in the game. Goeke finished with 12 saves in 70 minutes, while Schmitz went the distance for the Lancers with 11 saves.
Davidson returns to action, hosting California at Belk Turf Field on Thurs., Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. and Longwood on Sun., Sept. 16 at 3 p.m.
