DAVIDSON, N.C. - Upon the departure of Lisa Thompson, Ginny Sutton has been named the women's field hockey interim head coach for the 2007 season, announced today by Davidson athletic director Jim Murphy.
After a successful five-year tenure with the Wildcats, Thompson has accepted the position of assistant athletic director and varsity field hockey coach at Charlotte Country Day and will be succeeded by Sutton, her assistant for the past two seasons.
"Ginny's experience with our team over the past two years and as a player during her time at William & Mary make her the perfect choice to lead our team this season and build on the foundation of progress Lisa's five years as head coach has created," Murphy said.
A 2005 graduate of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., Sutton has been involved in all aspects of the program for the past two years, working with offensive and defensive strategy and assisting with recruiting.
In addition to her stint with the Wildcats, Sutton has coached for the Colonial Field Hockey Club in Williamsburg, as well as the Futures Olympic Development sites and various camps at William & Mary, Davidson, Appalachian State, James Madison, Richmond and Longwood.
As a player, Sutton helped her team to an NCAA tournament appearance in 2002 and captained the squad as a senior. In 2004, she was named to the All-Colonial Association Second Team and selected to the NFHCA Division I North/South All-Star team. She served on the Student Athletic Advisory Council while helping the Tribe to top-15 national rankings in each of her four seasons.
The Wildcats will open the fall season with an exhibition against NorPac-conference foe Appalachian State on Belk Turf Field on Aug. 18 at 1 p.m.
