PALO ALTO, Calif. — The Davidson Wildcat field hockey team has earned the fourth seed and a 1 p.m. (EST) showdown with the fifth-seeded Longwood Lancers, as they open play at the 2007 NorPac Tournament tomorrow on the campus of Stanford University.
California and Stanford shared the 2007 NorPac regular-season championship. Both teams finished with 5-1 league records, but the Golden Bears claimed the top seed thanks to their 2-1 regular-season win over the Cardinal. California earned a least a share of the regular-season title for a ninth straight season, while Stanford picks up the second seed for a second straight season.
Pacific (4-2) earned the third seed, followed by the 'Cats (3-3). Longwood and Radford finished the season with identical 2-4 records, but the Lancers earned the fifth seed with a 3-0 win over the Highlanders. Appalachian State (0-6) is the seventh seed.
The NorPac tournament opens with three first-round games tomorrow and concludes with the Championship game at 5:30 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 3. Following the Davidson and Longwood match, No.3 Pacific will battle No. 6 Radford at 3:30 p.m. No. 2 Stanford and No. 7 Appalachian State close out the first day at 6 p.m. No. 1 Cal, who earned a first-round bye, will play its first game on Fri., Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the championship game will host the winner of the Northeast Conference Tournament in a NCAA play-in game on Tues., Nov. 7.

The 'Cats hold an 8-4-1 lead in the all-time series with the Lancers, including a pair of wins in 2007. Senior forward Kayli Maxwell scored a pair of goals, and sophomore keeper Christa Goeke tallied 12 saves to preserve Davidson's 4-1 win over the Longwood Lancers on Sept. 8 in Farmville, Va. Maxwell converted on a penalty stroke in the 86th minute to lift the 'Cats to a 3-2 double-overtime win over Longwood at Belk Turf on Sept. 16.
Scouting the Lancers
The Lancers (6-14, 2-4) are coming off an 8-0 loss to California in their final regular-season contest in Berkeley on Tuesday.
Katie Claxton, a member of the All-NorPac Second Team last season, leads the team in scoring with nine goals and four assists for 22 points, while Carla Binnewies and Julia Hernandez have each scored three goals and three assists. Avanell Schmitz has started all 20 games in goal for the Lancers, allowing 60 goals in 1314:40 minutes for a 3.19 GAA. She also has 162 saves and sports a 5-14 record.
Longwood is coached by Nancy Joel, who is in her 10th season with the Lancers. The Lancers finished 5-13 overall in 2006 and went 2-4 in their second season as a member of the NorPac. Longwood is eligible for the NorPac tournament for the first time this season.
