Heafner had a stellar campaign during his junior season with the Wildcats baseball program, hitting at a .448 clip that ranked second in the nation. The third baseman tallied a program-best 91 hits during 2005, and he also collected 142 total bases, which was first in single-season school history until 2017, when senior Will Robertson broke the record. In addition to carrying a hot bat, Heafner also served as the team's closer for three seasons. His 11 saves in 2004 was a program-best until broken during the ’Cats’ magical 2017 run by Westin Whitmire ’17, who had 13 saves. Heafner also ranks fifth and eighth on the single-season ledger with eight saves in 2006 and six in 2005, and he has the school record with 25 career saves. In total, Heafner, who was chosen as the Southern Conference Player of the Year and a third-team All-American, ranks in the Top 10 in seven single-season and eight career categories for hitting. In 2006, on the brink of his senior season, Heafner became the first (and to date, only) Wildcat ever selected as a Preseason All-American.Â
