In 1992, the Wildcats recorded a program-best 17 wins and captured the hearts of the Davidson campus and community en route to a NCAA Division I Final Four appearance. Davidson advanced on penalty kicks through the first and second rounds of the tournament with wins over UNCC and Coastal Carolina. The 'Cats qualified for the semifinals with a 1-0 overtime victory against No. 2 North Carolina State and went on to host the Final Four in front of a record 8,000 fans at Richardson Stadium. The Wildcats played 552 minutes of soccer during the four tournament games, which works out to over six regulation games. Davidson fell 3-2 in overtime to San Diego in the semifinal game. Head Coach Charlie Slagle was honored as Division I National Coach of the Year. In addition to capturing the 1992 Southern Conference Championship, the Wildcats' most notable regular season wins came over North Carolina at UCLA.
