
Sears Claims 5k Crown in Day One of A-10 Indoor Champs

KINGSTON, R.I. – Senior Sarah Sears reset the school record in the 5,000-meters and claimed the Atlantic 10 Indoor title in day one of the conference championship Saturday at Mackal Fieldhouse on the campus of Rhode Island.

Sears was within a second of the A-10 Championship record, stopping the clock in 16:28.31 for her first A-10 title. Junior Caroline Yarbrough came home behind her teammate, crossing the line in 16:35.38.
Earlier in the day, two Wildcats posted program records. Senior Stephanie Hautamaa cleared 3.65-meters (11'11.75) in the pole vault to tie for third, while sophomore Makayla Binter earned 3296 in the pentathlon to place fourth overall.Â
Davidson sits in third after one day of action, registering 30.5 points Saturday. Dayton (41.5) and George Mason (35.5) head into day two in first and second overall.

Three Wildcats will return in Sunday's final sections. Sophomore Maddie Hunter owns the fastest prelim time in the 1k. The Charlottesville, Va., native stopped the clock in 2:55.29. Junior Tori Long will compete in the 500-meter final after claiming the last slot with a time of 1:17.92. Freshman Eleni Daughters also made the finals last spot, stopping the clock in 800-meters in 2:16.09.

The distance medley relay team of Katie Hines, Sophia Mills, Claire Nieusma and Sierra Ponthier placed seventh overall with a time of 12:04.03.
